Fashion Footprints: Sustainable Approaches exhibition 2010

Having studied Textiles in school this seemed a good exhibition for the Year 9’s to visit. The exhibition at The Centre for Contemporary Art and the Natural World highlighted the problems facing sustainability in the textile industry. The students were made aware of ethical fashion and how changes in the future design, sourcing and manufacturing of textiles can have a big impact on the world environment and its’ people.

Johanna, our workshop guide, engaged the students straight away with a discussion on ‘what is ethical fashion?’ They were able to see examples of clothing designed by graduates from the London College of Fashion made from sustainable fabrics. They viewed some short, but interesting and sometimes distressing videos about the production and use of world textiles. Further discussions enabled them to think about being young consumers of fashion and how being better informed, will help them make decisions about ethical fashion in the future.

The students enjoyed their trip to Haldon but wished they had more time to visit the trails and the Cafe!
