Our school has a little organisation called SWOP for the students who want to do walks and outdoor activities with the school. Usually this involves taking part in externally arranged challenges such as the Sidmouth Saunter and some people even go on to do the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and the Ten Tors event on Dartmoor. SWOP stands for St Wilfrid’s Outdoor Pursuits.
The staff involved on a day-to-day basis with SWOP hold a range of qualifications which are regularly re-assessed and updated:
Mr Bovingdon: Summer Moorland Leader (Devon County Council), Emergency First Aid At Work (St John Ambulance)
Mr E Macdonald-Dent : Summer and Winter Moorland Leader ( Devon County Council) First Aid and Safety for the Outdoors.
There also other staff involved who also hold relevant qualifications.
Ten Tors is not so much about Tors,
or that there are Ten of them,
or even about a long trek over Dartmoor
through some inevitably testing weather.
It is about six mates and how they take on The Challenge,
individually and as a team.
It is a roller-coaster of blisters, doubt,
and incredible pride.
It is Dartmoor’s way of laying bare your soul.
